Today during EA's press conference at Gamescom, BioWare finally revealed what they have been teasing for so many weeks.
Entitled Shadow Realms, the game will be a dark fantasy online action RPG that pits four players against the malevolent Shadowlord. The draw with this game is that the Shadowlord is player controlled.
The world of Shadow Realms is being described by BioWare as a "modern fantasy world", but will have players taken on iconic RPG roles such as Assassins, Warriors, Wizards and Clerics as they work together to overcome monsters in the universe set upon them by the Shadowlord. The Shadowlord will have the ability to control creatures, set traps and control the environment.
"It is a game that finally fulfills that fantasy of a never-ending RPG where the players meet up regularly to keep their epic adventures going for as long as they want." states James Ohlen, Studio Creative Director of BioWare. "All the enemies, traps and challenges are squarely in the hands of another player, who controls them just like a Dungeon Master. The monsters and villains are smart and unpredictable, making every battle a test of strategy and power. Best of all, everyone gets to enjoy a story that plays out like their favorite TV series, but where they decide the fates of its world and characters."
BioWare states that while this may be an online RPG, the game will still be heavily story-driven and will pull players into a "dark realm and centuries old battle". The story of Shadow Realms will evolve in episodic content that will be a "constantly evolving story.
No firm release date for Shadow Realms has been given. The game will be available exclusively for PC. Players can signed up for a Closed Alpha here.
