SEGA has announced they will be releasing Sonic Generations for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The game is expected to be a union of Sonic's 1991-style 2D side-scrolling we're all familiar with, along with its more recent 3D adventures. All this will be combined with the familiar franchise environments newly built in HD.
Sonic's newest adventure will have Sonic pulled into mysterious "time holes," all the while being reunited with old friends on the way. Naturally Sonic must find out who's behind the strange things that are afoot.
The usual Spin Dash and Spin attack will be available when you play as classic Sonic (when pulled back in time), and Sonic Boost and Homing Attack will be available for modern Sonic.
The timing of the release, which is due out in late 2011, is no mere coincidence; this hedgehog is celebrating his 20th anniversary.
"Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic's 20th Anniversary," stated brand director David Corless. "By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era.
"Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic's universe in a truly unique and imaginative way."
